Earthquake!
[Update: Downgraded to 5.4 and some minor injuries. Double bummer.]

I don't want to be excited about it until I find out no one got hurt, but we just had a 5.8 with the epicenter about 40 miles from here. Only the 2nd earthquake I've felt in my time in LA, and definitely the most dramatic.

I was grinding beans for coffee and I heard a crash, the apartment started to shake, and I heard screaming from upstairs. My first thought was to wonder what the idiots upstairs, who often have domestic strife (though none that ever sounds violent) were up to now. But it lasted a little too long to be someone throwing furniture or whatnot. Then the older woman in the apartment across the way yelled, "That was a big one!" It was done. My heart was racing a little and the water in the coffee carafe was still sloshing around.

Being a dork, I immediately raced to usgs.gov and started hitting "refresh." Well, in between reloads I did go start my coffee machine :) I'm hearing phones ring all over the apartment complex now.

Here it is: USGS map.
